Mid-term is fast approaching, so we’ve compiled a list of exciting activities for you and your family to make sure everyone has an enjoyable few days off. There’s plenty of choice from outdoor adventures to cultural activities alike. Keep boredom at bay.
The Lough Boora Discovery Park is a stunning landscape which is located at the centre of Ireland. It is perfect for those family days out biking, walking or for nature lovers of all ages to amble through. Enjoy the scenic trails and discover the lakes, wetlands, grassland and woodland areas.
Embark on an exciting route on the Old Rail Trail Greenway with over 40km of biking. It’s an ideal way to spend a few hours as there’s plenty of entry and exit points so you can hop off for a rest or explore the villages and attractions along the way.
Explore the wooded glades and farmlands of Portlick and the Whinning peninsula of Lough Ree at Portlick Millenium Forest Walk. The majority of the walk is close to the lake so you can stroll and take in the beautiful views along the way. The trail is 5 km with shorter alternatives if needed, ideal for all the family. Or visit Dún na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park which has planted parklands and a wetland reserve which is home to native wildlife species.
There’s also an array of fun activities and walks at Lough Key Forest & Activity Park. The Cycle Trail is ideal for families with kids’ bikes, bikes with child seats or tag-a-longs or there is also a choice of Walking Trails to suit all abilities. The younger kids will enjoy the Adventure Play Kingdom which is equipped with towers, slides, climbing frames, roundabouts, swings, puzzles and other innovative play equipment.
Stretch your legs and take in the sights on the Shannon Banks Walk before heading for a bite to eat. Starting at the impressive looking Athlone Castle, this looped walk follows the banks of the River Shannon and the Old Canal Bank.
Athlone Equestrian Centre are holding a Mid-Term Camp on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st February. Activities include pony games, stable management and advice on how to look after your horse or pony.
