VOCATIONS SUNDAY

Dear Parishioners,

Today is Vocations Sunday when we pray for vocations to the priesthood and Religious Life.

One of the most urgent issues facing the Diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnois is the declining number of priests. At the moment each parish has at least one priest, unfortunately this will change due to the ongoing decline.

Currently there are 57 priests in ministry in the forty-one parishes of the Diocese.  Over the next five years 12 priests will reach retirement age (seventy-five) and only one priest will be ordained. During the following five years an additional 10 priests will reach retirement age. So over a decade 22 priests now in ministry in parishes will retire - there are very few replacements.  The Diocese has two students studying for the priesthood: one in his second last year and one is in first year, so the outlook for the short to medium term is one of a dramatic decline in the number of priests.

I write this letter to draw your attention to the matter because it will impact on all parishes and on the workload of priests.

During the few months I have been in the Diocese I have met many parishioners who have spoken highly of their priests.  There is a great sense of working together in parishes: Readers, Ministers of the Eucharist, Choirs, Committees and groups all contributing to making our Sunday liturgies and our parish life more welcoming and more engaging.

Over the next year a process will take place to engage parishioners and clergy in planning for the future of the Diocese. As part of the preparation for such planning I hope to meet with Parish Pastoral Councils and listen to their views as I believe they play a key role in the Diocese.

We continue to pray that more will consider the priesthood as a way to live their lives in the service of Jesus Christ and of his Good News and that they will answer God's call with our encouragement and our support.

Francis Duffy,
Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois.
